MP3: Goodbye Girl - The Shins

So of course when I first saw this over at stereogum, I got very excited, The Shins are making new music? Well unfortunately, no. well not yet. They are however doing a pretty damn good cover of Squeeze's goodbye girl. Read more and download after the beep.

Cousins - Mumford & Sons (Vampire Weekend Cover)

Are you ready for the most insanely good cover of the last few years. If you thought the original was good try this little folky number, it makes me think that it would be a good idea if Mumford & Sons just sung all other songs because 99.9999999999% of those covers would probably be pure gold. Just like this one. Enjoy.

Electrocution - Nada Surf

Nada Surf have been around for a long time, and they have slipped into that non creative device of doing an album of covers. Normally this spells the end of most bands, but not Nada Surf. From what i can get from their cover of Bill Fox's 'Electrocution' this album is exactly what the band needed to do. In a way, as long as a band keeps their quality within a cover it is actually a great way to produce an album for fans and quickly. Anyway...enough judging an album before I have heard it, what I can say is this song is good. Enjoy.

Unfinished Business - Mumford & Sons

Mumford & Sons are one of those bands that can get away with covering a song quite easily, they have such a distinctive sound which allows them to make any song sound new and different to the original. Despite this the original in this case is a killer track from White Lies called "Unfinished Business" which couldn't really be improved upon in my opinion....But Mumford and his sons had to go and prove me wrong, what a track this is! Ruby Soho (Rancid Cover) - Vampire Weekend

That's something I never thought I would post, Vampire Weekend cover Rancid! At first I was sceptical, very sceptical. However my doubts were unfounded, Vampire Weekend's style of playing actually complements the punk side of the song very well. I think this is because the fast riffs vampire weekend can play keep the pace whilst Ezra Koenig's voice adds a little more subtlety to the lyrics than his punk counterpart. MP3 is below. Enjoy.

Whatever You Like (T.I cover) - Anya Marina

Ive got nothing against T.I.'s original "Whatever you like" I'm just saying this version is a lot better. Anya removes the repetitive synth beat that overwhelms the original and replaces it with intricate guitar and a hauntingly beautiful voice (which i think we can all agree T.I. doesn't have).
In a musical world dominated by singer songwriter's whose career achievement is getting a song on an i-pod advert Anya Marina stands out from the Starbucks loving crowd, partly due to her voice and partly due to her songwriting skills (i am aware of the irony that i am posting a cover). If you like this excellent cover check out her latest album "Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II"
