So Evolution Festival is only three days away but really it kicks off on Saturday night when all over Newcastle all the best local bands are set to play six FREE gigs. Bands playing include Detroit social club, Let's Buy Happiness, Mammal Club, Mansfield Holiday and Viva City. Transatlanticism's pick of the bands playing Evolution Emerging after the beep.
7.45-8.15@The Cluny LET'S BUY HAPPINESS
My top recommendation has to be Let's Buy Happiness, they have been able to quickly establish themselves as one of the top bands in the North East and are already beginning to turn heads from further afield. They have already caught the attention of Radio 6's Tom Robinson and have a slot at Glastonbury on the legendary John Peel Stage. They are more than capable of justifying this popularity with their unique blend of atmospheric indie-lullabies. You would be mad to miss them. Listen to Lets Buy Happiness peform 'Works Better on Paper' live below.
8.30-9.00 @ The Cluny MAMMAL CLUB
They have the disjointed samba style of Friendly Fires with the catchy guitar riffs of Foals making them another must see on Saturday night. Plus they are in the same venue as LBH so you don't even have to sprint around. Listen over at their myspace.
8.30-9.00 @ The Tyne MANSFIELD HOLIDAY
Probably for fans of Art Brut or Pulp. They have that laddish spoken lyric with a strained chorus reminiscent of Jarvis Cocker. Unfortunately they clash with Mammal Club so it's one or the other I'm afraid. Listen over at their Myspace.
10.00-10.30 @ The Tyne VIVA CITY
These guys know all about playing at festivals. They played evolution last year and have just returned from SXSW over the pond. If you haven't seen them live yet you really have missed out but what better time to put that right than when they are playing a free gig. Listen over at their myspace.
10.45 @ The Cluny DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB
Without a doubt Detroit Social Club are the biggest band to play Evolution Emerging. They have already supported Primal Scream and The Futureheads and have gained praise from all over the music industry they make a hearty brand of rhythm driven rock which is guaranteed to get you toe tapping. Listen to their debut single 'Rivers and Rainbows' below.
